New challenge – from intercultural assistance to intercultural mediation (2015)

Following the training of our own active members who have been trained in intercultural assistance in the previous year, we have decided to support the entire team so that they are able to handle complex issues related to integration, negotiation in the community, etc. SEA-l has long been engaged in establishing intercultural mediation and its development presents a new challenge for the association. Also the immigration policy of the Czech Republic begins to employ intercultural mediation as an instrument aimed at minimizing the tensions arising from the encounter of the majority and minority culture and strengthening social cohesion.

Expansion of the network of Czech-Vietnamese assistants in the South Moravian Region (2014–2015)

The level of integration of immigrants varies depending on the specifics of each ethnic group – different status, complicated conditions for integration, cultural origin, awareness of the legal environment of the Czech Republic, and so on. Access to information leads to different levels of social inclusion or exclusion. Qualified intercultural assistants are necessary in order to support the integration of foreigners, or more precisely disadvantaged Vietnamese immigrants, into society and the Czech labour market. The project was designed for young Vietnamese from the South Moravian Region speaking Czech and Vietnamese and interested in becoming an intercultural assistant. It was implemented in cooperation with a project partner VOLONTÉ CZECH o.p.s and it has opened a path to a number of useful contacts in Moravia for us.

Expansion of the network of Czech-Vietnamese assistants (2013–2014)

The necessary Czech-Vietnamese assistants were trained also as a part of another project aimed at supporting Vietnamese nationals’ entry and integration into the Czech labour market, this time, after years, again in Prague. Together with our project partner VOLONTÉ CZECH we responded to a growing demand from a number of public and commercial entities (MoLSA, MoI, Police of the Czech Republic, Integration Centres for Foreigners in the Czech Republic, Caritas Czech Republic, the House of National Minorities, TRW Automotive, law and distraintment offices, hospitals, schools, etc.) to provide services of a qualified bilingual Czech-Vietnamese assistant, as well as to the demands of the Vietnamese who have worked with us on a number of projects as volunteers but lacked a professional basis needed for the position of a Czech-Vietnamese assistant.

Professionalization of the Czech-Vietnamese intercultural expert team of the civic association Klub Hanoi (2013–2014)

Since its establishment until 2006, Klub Hanoi has functioned on a professional, but purely voluntary basis. It aimed at creating the foundations for a cultural bridge between the heart of Europe and Southeast Asia, and Vietnam in particular. Gradually, however, the interest in its activities and especially in projects and information concerning Vietnamese culture and the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic increased to the extent that it had to start applying for funding for its activities. After 10 years we managed to get support for a project on Klub Hanoi itself.

Support and integration of Vietnamese immigrants into the labour market through vocational training (2012–2014)

A lot of young Vietnamese came to the Czech Republic but they did not manage to find their dream job here and many of them ended up in dire straits and had to be supported by their families in Vietnam, although their original idea was to use the income from the Czech Republic to provide for their families in Vietnam. Through intensive individual support, this project focused on labour integration of young Vietnamese residing legally in the Czech Republic who were under the age of 25, had low professional potential and low level of Czech, but wanted to live and work in the Czech Republic.

Information service for Vietnamese migrants in the Czech Republic / Better Information for Better Migration (2011–2012)

The Ústí nad Labem Region has the second largest Vietnamese population in the Czech Republic after Prague. However, while in the capital city there are a number of organizations working with foreigners, the Ústí nad Labem Region offers very few services to migrants. Klub Hanoi has implemented a project focused specifically on Vietnamese clients in the region, namely in Chomutov: We have trained more Czech-Vietnamese intercultural assistants, opened a legal counselling office and provided fieldwork counselling and assistance with authorities. The project also included a research focusing on the socio-economic situation and problems of the Vietnamese community; it was the first research of this kind carried out in the region.
